Our trip to York on Wednesday was a great opportunity to spend time with both the British and American students on this exchange, as well as a chance to see some of York's historic sights and museum exhibits. We started by touring the largest cathedral in northern England, York Minster Cathedral. Although we were not able to go to the top of the cathedral, our tour guide showed us many beautiful aspects of this place of worship, such as its stained glass windows, carved limestone figures, towering arches, decorated ceilings, and crypts. We also saw the grotesques, which were, as their name implies, not exactly beautiful, but still interesting; the tour guide wasn't sure exactly why they were added to the cathedral, but he suspected that the artists were tired of carving perfectly beautiful engravings and statues. After touring the cathedral we had a chance to eat lunch and walk around York to see various shops and restaurants. We then walked to the National Railway Museum, where we had time to explore and visit exhibits in smaller groups. I found it interesting to see the different models of trains and how travel has evolved over time. We returned to QEGS in time to see the start of their rugby game in Twickenham. It was fun to see all the students so excited to support their classmates who were in the game, but I really had no idea what was happening and there wasn't much of an opportunity to get an explanation of the rules, so I think most of us were pretty lost. All in all it was a fun day and a great chance to hang out with everyone on the exchange!
